TITLE: Director of Lab Operations

LOCATION: Bellevue, WA

Director of Lab Operations

The Director of Lab Operations will assume responsibility for coordinating all operations at our Laboratory Facilities and will oversee the lab facility managers who are responsible for maintaining all the lab facilities for TerraPower. This individual will ensure operations are conducted safely and efficiently. They will interact heavily with individual projects who are working in the lab, including Natrium, MCFR and TerraPower Isotopes, and will identify and resolve resource conflicts. This individual will be in charge of integrating the overall operating expense and capital funding needs for the facility and will be responsible for managing the facility management cost center.

Responsibilities

• ‘Hands on’ leadership of operations of laboratories including coordination with variety of activities in radiological lab, experimental work, equipment erection as well as shipping/ receiving, equipment purchase, maintenance, building systems and configuration and compliance with contractual or lease requirements for lab facilities.

• Manage diverse professionals with responsibility for laboratory facility functions.

• Oversight of preventive maintenance plans for all lab facility equipment. Establish and maintain configuration management plan for the facility and installed equipment.

• Work with tenant projects, and Finance to optimize and manage facility CAPEX and operating expense budgets.

• Ensure a 24/7 operating conscience for this high consequence facility.

• Lead technical and investor tours of labs, ensuring project representation.

• Coordinate closely with EHS team.

• Coordinate and interact with the leaders of functional units and testing activities at the laboratory sites to ensure tasks are planned for, on track for successful completion, and decommissioned as required.

• Implementation of Lab Management Plan.

• Lead Emergency Response planning and programs for the laboratories.

• Implement TerraPower physical security requirements.

• Responsible, through coordination with Environmental Health and Safety and Corporate Facilities for safety, including ensuring employees have appropriate PPE, ensuring related procedures and notices are in place, ensuring safety equipment is checked and safety-related systems and items are well maintained.

• Oversight of service vendors when onsite at a lab facility. (shared)

• Responsibility for inventory tracking of lab tools, materials and chemicals.

• Oversight of hazardous and radioactive waste storage and disposal, including shipping as needed.

• Review costs, allocations and any relevant recoveries pertaining to the laboratories to assure that program and projects are performing to expectations and to budget. Provide support to project managers for their budgets.

• Keep executive leadership team informed of facility and operations performance.

• Resolve complex issues and problems utilizing a comprehensive understanding of operations practices.

• Manage the development and execution of laboratory schedules, including coordination of power needs and uses.

• Review and execute procedures as necessary to operate such as start up reviews, pre job or post job briefs, etc. and ensure operations conform to company policies, procedures, values and to federal, state, and local guidelines.

• Ensure the facilities are managed as a strategic asset for TerraPower, ensuring alignment with TerraPower business plan.

• Collaborate with stakeholders to improve business processes where needed.

Key Qualifications and Skills

• BS in science or engineering required with 12+ years’ in an operations leadership role; or MS in science or engineering with 10+ years’ experience in an operations leadership role.

• Prior experience with nuclear related facilities and radiological work.

• Demonstrated experience successfully running laboratory operations or relevant facilities.

• First-hand knowledge of, and a passion for working with a wide variety of electrical, mechanical, and chemical systems and components.

• Experience developing budgets, schedules, and plans.

• Knowledge of glove box and hot cell operations is preferred.

• Analytical / problem solving skills to understand data and make operational decisions.

• Must be able to work flexible hours when necessary.

• Knowledge and understanding of isotope production.

• Effective written and verbal English communication skills required.

• Demonstrated experience leading, managing, hiring a successful team.

• Ability to evaluate operating conditions and exercise sound judgment.

• Military experience is a plus

• The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.

• Work Conditions: Stairs, typing/keyboard, standard and/or sitting working environment of >8 hrs./day. Ability top work in laboratory environment with varying temperatures.

• Travel required 5-10%

Salary Range L13: $187,088 – 268,39

*Typically, our employee salaries are within .90 – 1.0 of the mid-point of the posted salary band. Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected individual’s qualifications and experience. This range is specific to Washington State.
