Job Description

Do Epic Science
TAE is the world’s first private fusion energy company, founded in 1998 to commercialize the cleanest, safest, most affordable, and sustainable form of carbon-free power. We are applying science and engineering to design transformational technologies. Whether it's harnessing fusion through the science of stars, making exponential leaps in power efficiency, or innovating medical care with a novel cancer treatment: We're turning the promise of science into reality.

We’re looking for candidates who are passionate about realizing our mission: A future where all people have affordable access to reliable, abundant, and environmentally friendly fusion-generated electricity.

About The Role

We currently have an opening at our Irvine, CA (Orange County) facility for a Sr. Mechanical Engineer, High Heat Flux. The successful candidate will include direct engineering tasks along with leading teams of scientists and engineers assigned to the vessel sub-systems. The design and manufacturing process is done in conformance to TAE requirements roughly aligned with ISO 9001 standards. This position will participate in all phases of the design, analysis, manufacturing and deliveries from conceptual design through installation and commissioning.

  • Lead a technical team concentrating on various high heat flux components for the TAE Copernicus Project. The TAE axial machine configuration is different than Tokamaks or other magnetic confinement technology but has some commonality.
  • Components will be designed, analyzed, manufactured and commissioned with the help of TAE designers, analysts, engineers and physicists.
  • Material selection for all high heat flux components shall be accomplished considering the lack of neutron flux in our system design. Familiarity with refractory lined components and their application is key.
  • Working with manufacturers to apply established techniques for assembling first wall and limiter components using bonding, pressing, laser welding, etc. for reliable operation.
  • Oversee testing of subsystems to ensure that final design meets approved requirements prior to product finalization and integrated testing.
  • Oversee product architecture and design process, using own technical ability, experience, and industry knowledge to mentor, guide and motivate engineers.
  • Ensure product, documentation, and processes conform to regulatory/standards requirements.
  • Participates with in the development of schedules to address product requirements, including task estimation, resulting in engineering execution plans clearly defining measurable engineering phases or milestones.
  • Detect project execution risks and takes timely preventative or corrective action.
  • Takes part in review activities for all aspects of the product development process (e.g. requirements, design, and hazard reviews).
  • Detect technology and design issues and take timely corrective action, developing alternative approaches or proposing the diversion of resources where necessary.
  • Ensure safety and quality considerations and requirements are pro-actively addressed and implemented in product design.
  • Review, recommend, and implement changes in procedures consistent with company policies and objectives.

About You

  • 15+ years of experience supporting complex equipment, including design, analysis, design review cycles, integration, and fabrication of high heat flux components.
  • Extensive experience working with vendors of fabricated plasma facing structures and knowledge of deviations, non-conformances and quality processes.
  • Ability to review mechanical devices and propose alternatives or improvements to existing designs. Ability to create solutions to unique problems in coordination with technical team.
  • Ability to coordinate design reviews covering all aspects of vessel design and manufacturing.
  • Solid analytical, project management and problem-solving skills required.
  • Background in working with complex mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of installation and manifolding of beam dumps, limiters, and/or first walls is desirable.
  • Plasma surface interaction knowledge including erosion, sputtering, plasma contamination, etc. is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CAD Systems, preferably SolidWorks and/or Catia
  • Knowledge of analysis tools such as ANSYS or similar
  • Familiarity with Computational Fluid Dynamics and high heat transfer calculations.

Education

  • Required: B.S. Mechanical Engineering or closely related field
