About The Role

An Experimental Physicist specializing in the development and maintenance of plasma facing surfaces and related systems on the C-2W experiment is desired. Areas of responsibility include development and maintenance of titanium cathodic arc gettering systems, surface cleaning techniques using glow discharges, analysis of surface coating effects on fusion plasmas, and development of future wall conditioning techniques such as boronization and lithiation. The Experimental Physicist will be a member of the Particle Control Group in the Experimental Section of TAE’s Fusion Division and will participate in or lead experiments and analysis of wall recycling and coating efficacy.

  • Facilitate and participate in a world class experimental fusion program.
  • Maintain and improve existing wall conditioning processes such as titanium gettering and glow discharge cleaning.
  • Work with experimental and analysis leads to improve understanding of wall recycling and other plasma-surface interactions.
  • Lead development of new systems such as boronization or lithiation of plasma facing components for next-generation experiments at TAE.
  • Demonstrate and promote the TAE Core Values, Rules of the Road, and our Culture of Safety.

About You

  • At least 2 years of experience in plasma scientific research including laboratory experiments, diagnostics, and data analysis.
  • Experience with various wall conditioning techniques such as gettering, glow discharge cleaning, vessel baking.
  • Understanding of the application of tools, test equipment, and process control such as:
  • Voltmeters, O-scopes, Data acquisition systems (NI, PLC)
  • Residual gas analyzers, vacuum hardware and gauges
  • Surface coating equipment / techniques such as physical and / or chemical vapor deposition
  • Experience using MS Office Suite is preferred.
  • Experience with project collaboration platforms and document management systems preferred.
  • Experience with design engineering software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience with scientific analysis languages (Python, Matlab, IDL, etc.) preferred.

Education

  • Required: M.S. degree in Physics or a closely related field.
  • Preferred: Ph.D. degree in Physics or a closely related field.
