Job Description

Position Overview:

Solid Power is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our talented team of engineers and scientists working to revolutionize the battery industry through the development of next‐generation, all solid‐state rechargeable batteries (ASSBs). Solid Power is a dynamic, fast‐paced, collaborative and innovative team environment. In addition to executing and managing mechanical designs and drawings for a variety of solid-state cell designs, the ideal candidate will support the development of manufacturing drawings and participate in the development and execution of unique thermo-mechanical test methods.

Job Duties:

  • Work within the Cell Development team to assist with design and analysis tasks related to cell design, manufacturing, and testing.
  • Define the mechanical design of cell & its components. This includes electrodes, tabs and pouches.
  • Design of tooling & equipment for forming, trimming, welding & pouching processes.
  • Work towards optimization of different Cell Manufacturing process steps by means of analysis using Finite Element Analysis software (FEA), hand calculations, and experimentation (DOE).
  • Manage design for manufacturing by leveraging a deep understanding of cell design, manufacturability, and process capability.
  • Design and analysis of various test fixtures to accommodate unique thermo-mechanical characterization.
  • Develop and complete tests to mechanically characterize the battery cell and its components.
  • Create and update CAD models, drawings & BOMs for Battery, Cell and sub-components in Solid Works and PDM/PLM system.
  • Work in the Cell Production Dry Rooms alongside Manufacturing Engineers and Operators on relevant experiments and equipment that advances our understanding of ASSB Pouch Cells.
  • Determine tolerances using GD&T and perform statistical tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Release/revise drawings through engineering change management.
  • Conduct design reviews to different target audiences.
  • Support the process engineering team in the development of manufacturing processes.
  • Support DFMEA & PFMEA activities.
  • Design and Optimization of Cell Testing Fixtures based on both analytical and experimental data.
  • Use the company’s document and change control system to properly archive technical documentation.
  • Work closely, collaboratively, and effectively with other departments and team members.

Qualifications/ Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or other related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a hands-on mechanical/manufacturing/design engineer working on mechanical and/or electromechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in designing & prototyping mechanical equipment, fixtures and tooling in 2D and 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Experience with GD&T and statistical tolerancing methods.
  • Ability to gather, clean, and preprocess large datasets from various sources (experimental data, simulations, ) for analysis.
  • Experience with statistical analysis methods and software for deriving meaningful insights from data.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience in FEA (ANSYS preferred) is a plus.
  • Experience in the battery industry is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of time in front of a computer.
  • Occasional time working in a dry/clean room wearing PPE including use of respirator.

Salary Range: $85,000 - $120,000 annually
