Job Description

Sol Systems is seeking a Senior Director of Development for our Utility-Scale Development team. This individual will be responsible for leading and managing early- to late-stage project development efforts. The Senior Director will manage a project team including a real estate manager, permitting manager, engineering, preconstruction, and project finance to execute solar projects through development to construction notice-to-proceed. This position is expected to be a source of project management and development expertise.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple early-, mid- and late-stage projects (all activities required to bring a project to NTP and financial close/sale, including securing sites, perfecting real estate, environmental and local permitting and related site studies, negotiating tax abatements, community engagement, and evaluating and coordinating interconnection activities)
  • Manage third-party and internal project development teams to achieve the development activities above.
  • Collaborate with the Sol Systems technical, engineering, finance and asset management teams with respect to the development activities above.
  • Collaborate across these teams to evaluate project development risks and project valuation assumptions.
  • Support greenfielding department as needed by providing input based on the person’s development experience.
  • Manage project’s schedule, budget, and inputs to the financial model. Understand and report to executes changes in project financials as development proceeds.
  • Build and enhance processes, work-flow procedures, risk review processes with approved risk tolerance metrics for utility scale projects in varying stages of development
  • Work alongside M&A team which is performing outside to project sellers, preliminarily screening projects, and negotiating MIPAs. This person will manage project diligence.

A successful candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:

  • Familiarity with MS Project or equivalent such as Smartsheet as well as budgeting in MS Excel or other programs. Familiarity with Smartsheet, Green IT or Salesforce a plus
  • Multiple years of hands-on utility-scale solar project development experience, through the entire development lifecycle of a project (securing sites, perfecting real estate, environmental and local permitting, negotiating tax abatements, and completing all site studies and evaluating and coordinating interconnection activities)
  • Proven track record managing such development projects and teams, including managing a team of in-house and third-party SMEs
  • A strong network of third-party development experts (including real estate, permitting, environmental and interconnection experts).
  • Deep knowledge of development studies, real estate activities, environmental and local permitting, and interconnection and how they drive development
  • Four-year college degree
  • Willing to travel as needed to support development activities

Location & Hours: This is a full-time role and will be based in our Washington, DC office.
