Job Description

The Company

Smallhold, a Certified B Corporation, is a growing network of organic mushroom farms with operations in Brooklyn, Austin, Los Angeles, and beyond. Named one of Fast Company’s 2023 Most Innovative Companies, Smallhold is upending the traditional model for mushroom cultivation and distribution. By operating urban farms in strategic regions, growing mushrooms on byproducts from other industries, and using compostable cardboard packaging, Smallhold improves product quality and extends shelf life, all while reducing overall footprint, food waste, and plastic usage.

Smallhold mushrooms and products can be found in over 1,000 grocery retailers across the country including Whole Foods Market, Sprouts, Central Market, Pavilions, United Grocer, Erewhon, Ralphs, Lassens, Misfits Market, FreshDirect, Safeway-Albertsons, as well as some of the nation’s most exciting restaurant kitchens. Full list of stockists and restaurants can be found here. You can also watch mushrooms grow onsite in Smallhold Minifarms found inside restaurants, grocery stores, and nonprofits.

Smallhold prioritizes understanding the unique needs of each community they operate within. This has resulted in soil remediation programs, educational tours, food donation programs, artistic collaborations, and more. Local organizations interested in utilizing spent mushroom substrate for community gardens, mycology education programs, permaculture projects or other partnership opportunities are encouraged to reach out to [email protected].

The Position

Smallhold is hiring a full-time Social Media & Content Manager. This role is an integral part of our small but mighty mushroom marketing team, reporting to the Director of Marketing and working closely with the Creative Manager, Sr Marketing Manager as well as Smallhold’s co-founders.

This is a hands-on role with a lot of room to grow. No two days look the same; one day you might be at our Brooklyn farm capturing video content in our grow chambers, the next you’ll be brainstorming new product launch ideas in the office. You’ll work with farmers, chefs, mycologists, filmmakers, artists, writers and folks from many walks of life. This role is a great fit for a creative person with a passion for social media storytelling, is quick with a caption, and has strong iPhone video skills paired with a scrappy let’s-get-it-done mentality.

The role is required in-office three days a week (Tues - Thurs). Must be located within commuting distance of Brooklyn, NY.

You Will:

Social Media

  • Create 30/60/90 day content calendar for key platforms (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn) that aligns with marketing objectives
  • Create and post content across core channels in partnership with marketing team and co-founders
  • Maintain brand voice through copywriting, ensuring consistency across all channels
  • Partner with Director of Marketing on Smallhold’s broader social media strategy, determining which platforms to invest in and what success looks like
  • Work with Creative Manager to develop content to support marketing initiatives and new product launches

Influencer & Partnerships

  • Build and maintain relationships with influencers, chefs, content creators and like-minded brands for shared content, giveaways, and social-first collaborations
  • Manage a modest number of paid content partnerships each month
  • Manage budget and report on success of paid creator campaigns

Social Analytics, Reporting & Research

  • Develop KPIs for each channel, with a clear path to achieve and track against benchmarks
  • Utilize social listening tools and leverage analytics to review performance data on social media and digital platforms
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest trends, best practices, and algorithm changes

Community Management

  • Manage and quickly respond to customer interactions on all social platforms, collaborating with internal teams to escalate when appropriate
  • Respond to comments, fostering a positive community and adding value to the experience i.e. participating in real conversations online

Email Marketing

  • Build and deploy 1 - 3 monthly newsletters + marketing emails. We don’t send a lot of traditional marketing emails so we make what we do send really count.
  • Pitch occasional guest editors for the monthly Mushroom Digest newsletter

Website Content + Updates

  • Write SEO optimized blog posts (1 - 3 per month), often as an extension of email marketing content
  • Make small updates to Shopify ecomm on a limited, as-needed basis. No web development experience is required.

You Have:

  • 3-5+ years of experience managing social media platforms or online communities with strong engagement
  • Proven ability to create and manage effective social media initiatives in a corporate or agency environment
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, demonstrating clarity of thought, ability to influence, and skill in adopting appropriate tone of voice
  • Exceptionally organized, efficient, and detail oriented; gracefully manages multiple priorities in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. Experience with Asana is a plus.
  • Creative self-starter who is comfortable with both taking initiative and working collaboratively
  • Knowledge & understanding of SEO, Google Analytics & organic social tactics
  • Comfortable occasionally being on camera for brand content
  • Experience with Photoshop & Illustrator a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business or a related field preferred

Benefits:

  • Annual based compensation: Up to $75-90K based on experience
  • Medical Dental and Vision Coverage
  • PTO and Paid Holiday Programs
  • Equity Participation
  • 401 (k) Plan
  • Mushrooms Always!
