Job Description

About Rewiring America

Rewiring America is the leading electrification nonprofit, focused on electrifying our homes, businesses, and communities. We develop accessible, actionable data and tools, and build coalitions and partnerships to make going electric easier for households and communities. Rewiring America helps Americans save money, tackle nationwide emissions goals, improve health, and build the next generation of the clean energy workforce. We believe in an abundant, flourishing, climate-safe future, and know that, together, we can realize one.

Position Summary

In this newly-created position, you will lead the software efforts to connect U.S. households with financing that supports them on a path to an all-electric home. As an Engineering Manager, you will principally be responsible for hiring and leading an initial team of four software engineers building financing tools in partnership with licensed lenders. You’ll play a pivotal role in defining and creating the software products, tools, and processes that allow us to make electrification projects affordable and accessible for households nationwide. This position reports to Rewiring America’s Head of Engineering.

Requirements

What You’ll Do

You will be a founding member and leader of a new engineering team that works closely with our Community Implementation, Product, Data Science, and Finance teams to integrate financing opportunities into new and existing electrification products and programs. You’ll work closely with multiple lending partners, find common patterns, and solve for those common and one-off needs across the web services, APIs, and applications you build.

You’ll work on a once in a lifetime opportunity to align government incentives, philanthropic dollars, world class data science, corporate commitments, and private finance to decarbonize residential buildings in low income and disadvantaged communities. As part of a new and growing team you’ll be flexible about how you spend your time: you may find yourself prioritizing hiring, writing or evaluating technical designs and documentation, rolling up your sleeves to build a demo, meeting with partners, or wearing the “product hat” to build the first roadmap for your team. And you may ask yourself: how did I get here?

You will:

  • Develop a clear understanding of where your team’s work fits into the household electrification ecosystem, and uphold the key tenet of an integrated, “joined up” customer experience throughout.
  • Consult with the Community Implementation, Product, Data Science, and Finance teams from the earliest stage of project explorations.
  • Work closely across disciplines to prioritize and deliver a roadmap that meets the needs of households and the programs that serve them.
  • Manage and grow the team and its members, offering timely feedback and being a trusted coach and mentor.
  • Guide the team toward robust and scalable engineering designs that meet financial expectations for accuracy, timeliness and completeness.
  • Find the right balance across optimizing developer experience and tooling, improving low level infrastructure, and sustained delivery of the product roadmap.
  • Proactively mitigate issues through automated testing, continuous deployment, thoughtful monitoring and alerting, and a healthy postmortem culture.

Who You Are

As an experienced Engineering Manager you have a track record of running teams and delivering projects that make a meaningful difference to the customers they serve. As a product-minded engineer you consistently focus on the “why” of your work, meeting the needs of the real people behind the project requirements. You are driven by a commitment to Rewiring America’s values, vision, and mission.

You’re capable yet humble about build-vs-buy decisions: both willing and able to create software that meets our objectives, but equally comfortable driving the evaluation and implementation of SaaS or open source options where those are a better fit for our needs. You are both a people manager and a technical leader responsible for the growth and success of your team, and its members. As an experienced people manager you will have the ability to guide, coach, and mentor junior and senior engineers. As a technical leader you can create and evaluate engineering designs, or facilitate discussions to resolve complex tradeoffs.

Your work will have an immense impact on historically disadvantaged communities and our ability to reach our climate goals. With this comes a tremendous responsibility that you will meet with humility and empathy for the communities we serve. The successful candidate demonstrates enthusiasm for making electrification easy, and models excellence and integrity in all they do. The selected candidate will also possess the following Core and Preferred qualifications and characteristics:

Core

  • Strong commitment to the mission, policies, and goals of Rewiring America.
  • 5+ years experience as a hands-on software engineer, including some technical leadership running projects, designing systems, or coordinating the work of multiple engineers.
  • 2+ years experience as a manager accountable for the success of a software engineering team.
  • Experience successfully recruiting, managing, and retaining a fully remote team.
  • Willingness to travel 2-3 times per year for team retreats.
  • Collaborative and communicative work style.
  • Demonstrated communication ability across multiple mediums, with skill in delivering information in a concise and compelling manner.
  • Ability to scope work to meet high-level objectives and independently communicate status updates.
  • You enjoy collaborative code and methodology reviews and can provide thoughtful, constructive feedback to peers.
  • Demonstrated positive impact on the overall health and productivity of the groups you work with.

Preferred

  • Experience in — or at the intersection of — climate, renewable energy, building electrification, lending, banking, financial services, civic or government tech, or other relevant domains.
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with some of our current stack (Google Cloud Run, Postgres, Node.js, Typescript, Vercel, React, Next.js, Terraform) is helpful but not required.
