This role in a nutshell:

The Cyber Defence team use their skills, workflows and the latest technologies to increase visibility and understanding of our data, systems, and services and their value to both OVO and attackers. They also lead detection and response efforts by optimising OVO’s ability to reduce the impact of cyber attacks on our customers, colleagues and business. You'll fix ill-defined problems, stay ahead of the latest trends, continuously improve our tooling, and develop our skills and processes.

Your key outcomes will be:

  • Identify, examine, respond to, and resolve security incidents through the application of your technical expertise, experience, and understanding of security principles.
  • Play a crucial role in automating and enhancing our security operations.
  • Contribute to a highly motivated and respected team which actively participates in community events, engages in continuous learning, and collaborates with other security professionals to stay updated on emerging threats and effective defensive strategies.

Proficiency. Familiarity with the following technologies and platforms would be advantageous (not a must have or exhaustive list):

  • Endpoint operating systems (e.g., Microsoft, Linux, OS X)
  • Core networking principles (e.g., switches, routers, wireless access points, Internet)
  • Infrastructure security devices (e.g., firewalls, proxies, IDS/IPS)
  • Supporting enterprise-level services (e.g., AD, DNS, DHCP, IIS, Apache, VPN/DA, Databases)
  • Log analysis for incident response
  • Anti-virus, anti-malware, ransomware, and data leak protection
  • Endpoint, Network and Cloud Detection and Response, SIEM and SOAR solutions
  • Endpoint forensics and intrusion analysis activities
  • Cloud computing platform security (e.g., AWS, Azure, GoogleCloud and Wiz)
  • Software as a Service event monitoring (Google Workspace, Salesforce, Slack, Atlassian etc)
  • Open source security tools

You’ll be a successful CSIRT Engineer at OVO if you…

  • Are a challenger: you are able to create psychological safety during an incident to focus on resolving the situation at hand and, when the incident is contained, take a step back, embrace the failure and have the conversations needed to drive security improvement.
  • Are a creator: you are a hands-on engineer who can triage security alerts methodically, lead a coherent response to incidents and either implement or embrace a willingness to learn automation and scripting. understands the value of rotating between solving engineering problems and stepping back to view a longer time horizon. Switching between roadmap and sprint is something you control rather than are controlled by.
  • Are a coach: you are committed to ongoing personal and team development, for example researching and coaching others in attacker tactics, techniques and procedures, and learning new approaches to attack detection and response.

We’ll pay you between £64,000 and £92,000, depending on your specific skills and experience. If your expectations are a little different, have a chat with us!

We keep our pay ranges broad on purpose to give us, and you, flexibility to match your experience to our zero carbon mission.

You’ll be eligible for an on-target bonus of 15%. We have one OVO bonus plan that focuses on the collective performance of our people to deliver our Plan Zero goal.
