Job Summary

ONE is looking to add a Sr. Adhesives & Sealing Engineering Specialist to its Mechanical Systems Engineering team. The successful candidate will join a brilliant engineering team to work on both current and disruptive technologies, and they will be the technical leader on developing and selecting adhesive and sealant technology for use in ONE’s battery packs and modules. This individual will have professional experience and deep knowledge in application selection of adhesives, dispensed seals, structural joining solutions and thermal interface materials.

This job is based at ONE’s headquarters in Novi, MI and reports to the Senior Director of Mechanical Systems Engineering.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate state of the art adhesive, sealing, and structural joining solutions
  • Work closely with adhesive and sealant suppliers to build catalogue of options for current and future applications
  • Identify materials in the applications of coatings, adhesives, sealants and thermal interface materials for improving the overall performance, reliability, or cost/weight reduction of the battery packs and modules
  • Specify pre-treatment and process specifications for various adhesive solutions
  • Plan and conduct material D.O.E.s to create a catalogue of materials for present and future use
  • Coordinate CAE and physical validation testing
  • Generate or update material specifications based on new material development
  • Audit material quality of ongoing production adhesive and sealant quality per material specifications
  • Consult plant production or quality in troubleshooting and implementing solutions to root cause problems with sealants and adhesives

Within 3 months you will:

  • Identify gaps in current adhesives and sealant selections. Collect data to fill gaps in knowledge. Implement improvements in selection, design and application
  • Become familiar with the ONE team and established products
  • Create strong working relationships with ONE employees inside and outside the Mechanical Systems Engineering team
  • Develop strong relationships with key suppliers
  • Take ownership of the adhesives and sealing design and engineering of one or more next generation battery packs in early phases of development

Within 6 months you will:

  • Build robust adhesives and sealing selection process
  • Develop in house adhesives and sealing testing capabilities
  • Lead A-sample battery sub-system design and prototyping of follow-on adhesives and sealing concepts
  • Resolve any uncovered design gaps

Qualifications

Education and Experience

You should be familiar with all, proficient with many, and expert at some of the following, in no particular order:

  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Engineering or Chemistry
  • Minimum two years of experience in dispensed adhesives or sealant selection for automotive applications
  • A proven track of record in developing exceptional adhesive, sealing, and joining solutions
  • Knowledge of pre-treatment and adhesive systems for aluminum and multi material structures
  • Specification development experience
  • 3D modeling experience beneficial (preferred: NX or SolidWorks)
  • Ability to reduce complex data into simplified summaries with conclusions and recommendations.
  • Hands-on product launch experience
  • Familiarity with mid to high-volume adhesive dispense technologies and methods, and experience working with outside suppliers for same
  • Experience with design for challenging environmental conditions in terms of vibration, water intrusion, corrosion, and thermal
  • Growth mindset. Enthusiasm for team and company goals
  • Strong written/verbal communication and organizational skills

  • Work at a desk with a laptop
  • Mobility to move between office space, test lab and manufacturing plant floor

Work Schedule

  • Full-time 40 hours and generally scheduled Monday through Friday 8am-5pm EST
  • Work schedule to be established with supervisor to ensure Company’s client and business needs are met
  • Flexible work schedule and environment, see company policy if applicable
