Job Description

Thanks for your interest in Oklo! We are searching for someone with a technical background, passionate about nuclear power and its ability to help communities by providing clean and reliable heat and electricity. Consideration of the impact of Oklo facilities to both the human and non-human environment is essential in deploying a product people want in their communities. Environmental compliance combines evaluation of technical aspects of the Oklo nuclear facilities with site characteristics and social considerations unique for each deployment. Thus, the engineer in this position must combine technical expertise in siting analysis and knowledge about the relevant regulatory framework with the ability to evaluate the potential community impacts of the project.

Position Description:

The Environmental Compliance and Siting Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and communicating strategies for addressing environmental regulatory requirements and best practices for siting Oklo facilities. They are also responsible for supporting site identification and characterization, and for generating documents to support the environmental and safety reviews. This includes working with our licensing team to identify safety-significant site characteristics.

Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Identifying repeatable approaches for addressing Federal, State, Tribal, and local regulatory requirements relevant to site identification and environmental impact of a small commercial nuclear facility
  • Performing reviews to identify general best practices for siting industrial facilities
  • Engaging with regulators to find right-sized solutions for a small fission plant facility that satisfy regulatory requirements
  • Engaging with customers and local communities to understand their questions and concerns and incorporate those considerations into the site identification and environmental compliance process
  • Supporting EPC and A&E relationships, and collaborating with our operations team and site contractors on site investigations and site preparations
  • Collaborating with our operations team and engineering, procurement, and construction contractors on procedures and best practices for human health and safety during site preparation and construction
  • Incorporating site-specific data into permits and applications as-appropriate to comply with regulatory requirements
  • Documenting work using modern tools and techniques and writing high-quality technical reports

Competencies:

We are looking for a Siting Licensing Engineer that is:

  • Passionate about clean energy
  • Passionate about making advanced fission a reality
  • Willing and able to learn quickly
  • Eager to work on a dynamic team, receive constructive feedback, and grow with us
  • Willing to think differently and do things in new ways
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, highly-iterative startup environment
  • Excited to think creatively, critically, and reflectively about the problems they are solving, while not leaning only on what has been done before
  • Willing to propose novel and creative solutions to technical problems
  • An excellent writer who can write in modern active voice (so make your cover letter compelling and write it well!)
  • Able to communicate technical content and results verbally
  • Eager to compassionately engage with informed and uninformed audiences alike

Experience level:

Intermediate (2-5yr) or Experienced (5-10yr)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in a relevant field (e.g., nuclear engineering, environmental engineering, civil engineering, geology, geography)

Bonus Qualifications:

  • A background in risk assessment
  • ArcGIS or QGIS proficiency
  • Government experience
  • Contractor experience
  • Proficient in Python, or other languages
