Job Summary
MycoWorks is seeking a Materials Scientist to work within the Process Development Mycology group onsite at MWSC. In this role, the Materials Scientist will serve as a biological expert, serving as the tactical and technical bridge between manufacturing manipulations and effect on product performance. The Materials Scientist will work to quantify the effects of manipulations on our biomaterials in-process and post-process. The materials scientist will be expected to perform method development, mechanical testing, and help run experiments to test new growth control and manufacturing techniques.
Responsibilities:
- Apply expertise with polymers/biopolymers, biomaterials, and industrial fungal material growth.
- Utilize a background with biopolymers or biomaterials and manufacturing processes and techniques to support ongoing initiatives.
- Set up and run small scale experiments following common DOE techniques.
- Perform mechanical testing such as Instron and accelerated lifetime testing.
- Engage in prototyping, testing, and method development activities.
- Collaborate with quality teams to assist in defining practical in-process measurements.
- Leverage past experience with bio-materials developing methodologies and employ a range of characterization techniques for testing polymer integrity and structure.
- Design and commission small-scale novel proof of concept systems.
- Demonstrate competency with Google Workspace products and Microsoft Excel.
- Utilize experience with R programming, if applicable, to enhance data analysis and reporting.
Requirements:
- Doctorate or Master’s degree in materials science, or comparable combination of experience and training (Masters + 4 years of industry experience or Bachelors + 6 years of industry experience).
- Knowledge of materials testing methodologies and quantitative lifetime measurements.
- Ability to perform complex procedures reproducibly.
- Ability to work independently after training in research procedures.
- Ability to organize and perform parallel experiments.
- Ability to analyze experiments and think critically about results.
- Ability to work collaboratively and manage a research team.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Experience with molecular biology techniques is a plus.
