Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineer II takes part in feature development, prototyping, testing, validation, safety, quality, and production activities. This role works cross-functionally; understanding and contributing to multiple parts of the system while focusing specifically on one or two parts.
Essential Responsibilities
- Lead new platform features from concept to implementation, carrying a project across design, testing, quality, and production
- Develop mechanical and electrical systems for self-driving vehicles related to vehicle drive-by-wire, sensor integration, and rider-facing features
- Design and implement prototypes of complex parts of the full vehicle system
- Evaluate and characterize sensors, actuators, and electrical and compute hardware
- Design and build physical systems for testing, analysis, and deployment
- Work with suppliers to outsource relevant pieces of projects
- Participate in FMEA and other review activities
- Participate in mechanical and/or electrical design reviews
- Maintain existing designs, product/platform BOM structures, documentation, and platforms to resolve any issues and release updates through MAY’s engineering change control process
Skills and Abilities
Success in this role typically requires the following competencies:
- Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts and designs
- Excellent communication among multiple stakeholders and project managers
- Knowledge and ability to apply ASME Y14.5 drawing standards, understanding of tolerance stack-ups
- Knowledge of multiple production manufacturing processes, such as injection molding, sheet-metal fabrication, or vacuum forming, including typical design for manufacturing and design for assembly techniques
- Ability to quickly adapt to new processes or methods
- Aptitude for systems-level thinking
- Proficiency in computer-aided design of mechanical components (Solidworks)
- Knowledge of and proficiency in various manufacturing techniques potentially including machining, molding, additive
- Basic automotive knowledge
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates most successful in this role typically hold the following qualifications or comparable knowledge or experience:
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical and/or electrical design
Desirable
- Prior experience working on real-world robotic or autonomous driving systems, sensors, and actuators
- Knowledge of automotive maintenance
- Familiarity with ISO26262 standards, or mechanical and environmental testing
- PDM experience, 3D experience, teamcenter or other
Physical Requirements
- Standard office working conditions which includes but is not limited to:
- Prolonged sitting
- Prolonged standing
- Prolonged computer use
Travel required? - Minimal: 1%-10%

$95,000—$120,000 USD
