Job Description

Bring your (computer) vision. Take LineVision to the next level. Accelerate the net-zero grid.

We're looking for a Computer Vision Expert to play a key role in revolutionizing the integration of renewable energy into global electric grids. Your expertise will be instrumental in elevating the quality and precision of algorithms, particularly in challenging conditions, and your contributions will significantly impact the development of both software and hardware systems within our dynamic and impactful team.

What will you do?

Core Responsibilities and Key Performance Objectives

Articulate a future vision and strong point-of-view for an end-to-end image processing pipeline and argue for the merits and design trade-offs of each step alongside software engineering and data engineering colleagues. Influence valuable concrete design choices for our next-gen camera vision sensor hardware that we likely would not have thought of without you. Demonstrate algorithms that reliably extract cable pixels from challenging images such as complex forested or grassy backgrounds, and multiple intersecting conductors. Develop new metrics for sag and blowout extraction quality and accuracy, and develop filtering criteria for rejecting the minimum number of bad images when necessary.

Within Three Months:

Knowledge Download. Fully understand what has already been accomplished with our existing proof-of-concept CV algorithms and research field testing, and identify “low hanging fruit” areas of improvement that are accepted as thoughtful and insightful by your new colleagues.

Squad up. Build strong personal relationships with Data Science, Software Engineering, and Sensor Hardware Squad colleagues such that you are seen as “one of the gang” and a trusted collaborator. Contribute Early. Influence design choices of camera vision platform hardware with a focus on lens specifications, pixel resolution trade-offs, semiconductor image sensor selection, and minimum computer processing requirements.

Within Six Months:

Algorithms, algorithms, algorithms!

Continue actively developing algorithms to address complex edge-case imagery: low light, rain, multiple crossing bundled conductors, camouflage backgrounds.

Develop best-practices and metrics for algorithmic quality and iteratively share research results with stakeholders, teammates, and senior management.

Develop methods for training and testing computer vision algorithms at scale using real or simulated data.

Within a Year and Beyond:

Contribute to the architectural design of an end-to-end production image data processing pipeline within a team data engineers & software engineers.

Evaluate statistical algorithmic quality aggregated across a multiple-camera network of sensors with multiple viewing angles, transmission line geometries, lighting conditions, and complex image backgrounds. What do you need to succeed in this role?

You demonstrate mastery of computer vision algorithmic techniques and how they work (edge detection, neural networks, segmentation, object detection, etc) and a deep understanding of the engineering tradeoffs. You have an especially good understanding of when to use Machine Learning approaches versus when to use classical computer vision techniques and why.

You can clearly explain your reasoning for algorithmic choices in an understandable way: we’re looking for someone who communicates with clarity and simplicity, with minimal “word salad” consisting of too much jargon and not enough relatable storytelling.

You are capable of influencing the design of an end-to-end computer vision processing pipeline: this is not your first rodeo where you’re making it up as you go. We need the expertise and experience to accelerate our path to market on a CV product by knowing and avoiding common pitfalls, and guiding optimal algorithmic design choices.

You are high-agency and have a track record of delivering results on teams: you can get things done in an organization by navigating politics, competing priorities, stakeholders, and resource constraints, to successfully deliver CV algorithms and processing modules that have provided real customer value.

What does joining LineVision mean for you?
