Company Overview

Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Plant Layout Designer to design complex technical plants. You will create models, drawings, and schematics in 2D and 3D format using a variety of designing programs and tools. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders involved in the design process, study and perform calculations to determine feasibility of plans, modify existing designs to reflect required updates and changes, and ensure delivery of designs for manufacturability standards.

Responsibilities

  • Partners with stakeholders to understand project requirements, specifications, and objectives
  • Develop detailed plant layouts, including equipment arrangement, material flow paths, access points, and safety considerations, using computer-aided design (CAD) software such as AVEVA, Plant 3D or equivalent.
  • Develop Iso Drawings using AVEVA or equivalent.
  • Conduct site surveys and assessments to gather necessary data and measurements for accurate layout designs.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and customer requirements while designing layouts.
  • Optimize plant layouts to minimize material handling distances, maximize space utilization, and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate with equipment vendors and suppliers to obtain necessary information and specifications for incorporating equipment into the layout design.
  • Evaluate and recommend equipment and machinery based on layout requirements, considering factors such as capacity, functionality, and maintenance accessibility.
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers to integrate utilities, power supplies, and infrastructure into the layout design.
  • Provide input and support during design reviews, offering suggestions for improvements and addressing potential challenges.
  • Generate 2D and 3D layout drawings, as well as associated documentation and reports, to communicate design concepts and implementation guidelines.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, procurement, and construction, to ensure seamless coordination and alignment during project execution.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of existing plant layouts to identify opportunities for optimization, efficiency enhancement, and cost reduction.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in plant layout design and material handling systems.
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field. Must have a minimum of an associates degree from an accredited university in engineering, design, or a field related to the position can be considered with relative experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years progressive experience in drafting/design related to engineering and construction
  • Aveva E3D modeling experience required. Structural and Supports experience a plus
  • Proficiency in using other computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as Navisworks, AutoCAD or SolidWorks is a plus
  • Nuclear experience is highly desired
  • Proficiency in CAD with demonstrated experience with CAD applications to originate and produce drawings with minimum supervision
  • Background and experience must include drafting/ designer experience in engineering fields, such as electrical, mechanical, structural, communications, architectural, fire protection or civil
  • Strong understanding of spatial planning, material flow optimization, and equipment placement principles
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations related to plant layout design and material handling systems
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders
  • Familiarity with project management methodologies and the ability to work within project timelines
  • Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and prioritize tasks accordingly
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of one self and others
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge
  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues

Safety and PPE

  • Reading and interpreting hazardous warning signs
  • Reporting issues with equipment or unsafe conditions
  • Wearing proper PPE, to include face mask, face shields, gloves, safety shoes

Travel

  • Some travel may be required, up to 10%

Additional Requirements

  • Requires occasional schedule flexibility
  • Requires seldom extended hours to support launch and critical project timelines
