Job Description
itselectric is a Brooklyn-based start up with a mission to unlock access to electric transportation in cities across the US. To support this effort, we’re seeking dedicated problem solvers who are passionate about building sustainable urban communities.
itselectric’s approach to EV charging is entirely unique, as demonstrated by our purpose-built curbside charger, which is the first/only UL-certified EV charger with a detachable charging cable.
The Product Design Engineer will lead itselectric’s continuous improvement of our initial product; including design and engineering, manufacturing runs, as well as QA/QC of the chargers once they have been deployed.
The Product Design Engineer will also lead the development of future product lines, which will include added functionality to increase wider market access. As the company’s first dedicated hire for product development at itselectric, the Product Design Engineer will be the architect of our short and long term product development.
Requirements
Candidate Requirements:
Strong candidates will have a minimum 10 years of relevant experience in software-driven hardware product development and manufacturing. Candidates should be familiar with all phases of product development, from conceptual design to deployment. Ideal candidates will have experience with engineering and designing consumer hardware, and understand integrating firmware and software into hardware functionality. Candidates will have experience managing teams, contractors, and consultants and creating and managing product development timeline. The Product Design Engineer should also understand the processes for expediting product certifications with UL, EnergyStar, FCC, etc. Candidate will oversee the delivery of production-ready plans, managing the BOM as well as production quality control/assurance.
Engineering degree in Mechanical, Electromechanical, Software, Engineering, Industrial Design or other relevant disciplines.
Relevant Experience:
Ideal candidate will have experience in the development of software-driven hardware, and experience developing EV chargers will be preferred, though not required. Candidates should have examples of hardware that have been physically built and are in use. Ideal candidates will have worked for a start-up, or in a start-up environment, i.e., small teams working nimbly and with flexibility.
Role Requirements:
-Experience with IoT devices or consumer electronics.
-Familiarity with PCB design and firmware development.
-Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360) and other design tools.
-Hands-on experience with product prototyping, including 3d printing, CNC rapid prototyping, and similar methods.
-Understanding of manufacturing processes, including the development of production-ready plans, supply chain and fabrication workflow, and quality control/assurance.
-Experience with hardware and software integration, including embedded systems.
-Knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, and prototyping techniques.
-Dedicated passion for problem-solving
-Willingness to be adaptable and collaborative, anticipating non-linear processes, and managing multiple competing priorities.
-Ability to work with autonomy, clarity, and precision.
-Ability to travel.
-Understanding of, or willingness to quickly become fluent with EV charging industry standards, including:
- OCPP and OCPI standards
- ISO 15118
- SAE J1772, J3068, and J3400
-Experience designing and deploying EV charging is not a requirement, however preference will be given to candidates with experience building EV charging hardware.
Ideal candidates will be able to work in-person four days a week at itselectric’s offices at Newlab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Compensation
Compensation for this position includes salary ranging $130,000-$160,000, depending on experience and qualifications, full health coverage, paid time off, and meaningful equity options.
