About the Position:
The grant writer will report to the VP of Philanthropy and support the development department in executing the organization's development strategy. They will serve as one of Greentown’s main points of contact for all grant inquiries and will help advance Greentown’s mission of building an inclusive community that convenes, connects, and inspires entrepreneurs and ecosystems to advance climatetech solutions.
This position will be responsible for researching, identifying, and securing new funding to support Greentown’s mission and achieve revenue goals. The grant writer will collaborate with various departments to understand needs and communicate them persuasively in donor and grant proposals. On a day-to-day basis, this role will draft grant proposals, develop reports, conduct grant facilitation, and manage and track all interactions in Salesforce to ensure granting success.
This role is expected to be on-site at Greentown Labs in Somerville, Massachusetts, or Houston, Texas at least three days per week, with the option to work remotely two days per week.
The Grant Writer will Support Greentown in:
- Leading various project teams to identify needs and match funding opportunities to those priorities; 2) Research, develop, secure, and monitor grants throughout their life cycle; 3) Track funding pipelines and develop reports for external and internal audiences.
Primary Responsibilities of the Role:

Build relationships with foundations, government agencies, and other institutions
Research and identify grant opportunities that align with Greentown’s mission
Communicate regularly with various departments to identify high-impact, underfunded priorities within the organization and share prospective grants, new prospects, and strategies for identifying additional funding to support these priorities
Write letters of intent and develop content for submission of corporate, foundation, nonprofit, and government grant proposals to existing and prospective funders
Lead project teams to prepare proposals, including conducting research, gathering internal and external data to support grant requests, and developing grant budgets in collaboration with various departments
Develop a grant opportunity pipeline in Salesforce, maintaining an annual calendar of proposal and report deadlines utilizing tracking tools to coordinate task assignments across departments to ensure timely submission of grant proposals, adhering to grant guidelines
Monitor active application statuses and complete necessary follow-up on grant proposal submissions, including draft acknowledgments and other correspondence to grantors
Maintain accurate and timely progress notes on all grants in Salesforce to reflect funding pipeline award status; use this data to distill learnings on accepted and rejected applications to develop insights and improve grant success rates
Keep up-to-date on the changing guidelines and regulations impacting grant management; identify and resolve issues that arise throughout the life cycle of the award
Ensure grant compliance with external agencies and internal finance processes
Assist the Finance Department with preparing reports for grants to funders as required; monitor spending and track program delivery and time allocation as assigned
Support the VP of Philanthropy in building short- and long-range grant strategies with contribution targets, annual budgets, and long-term forecasts
Ensure grant documents, including proposals, reports, deliverables, and funder communications, are appropriately filed and saved in Salesforce
Own a portfolio of grants and report to Greentown’s executive team on their progress
Manage sub-recipient monitoring on sub-awards/contract
Support the improvement and efficiency of submission processes
Skills & Experience:
Minimum of 3 years experience in grant-proposal writing with a demonstrated, proven track record of securing funding from institutional sources, preferably with nonprofit
Ability to multitask and juggle assignments, meeting tight deadlines while being flexible
Can work independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines and goals
Highly collaborative, communicative, and transparent, with the ability to build strong and effective internal and external relationships
Excellent writing and organizational skills; strong follow-through and attention to detail; high-level analytical, problem-solving, and presentation skills
Awareness and experience in engaging in conversations about all aspects of identity, as well as experience developing writing grounded in diversity, equity, and inclusion
Adaptable and excels in a diverse, high-energy, and rapidly changing environment
Experience and aptitude for working with fundraising CRM platforms, including Salesforce
Compensation, Location, Benefits:
The salary for this position is $60,000 and is commensurate with experience up to $75,000. In addition to a competitive salary, Greentown Labs also offers a generous benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, and 401k plan, and 25 days (5 weeks) of vacation time, plus holidays. This role is expected to be on-site at Greentown Labs in Somerville, MA, or Houston, TX at least three days per week, with the option to work remotely two days per week.
