Job Description

Thermal Engineering Intern

Gradient’s mission is to cool the world by transforming every home to be more comfortable and healthy for the people who inhabit it — without compromising the environment. Today, heating and cooling equipment emit more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation sector, and expansion in the use of cooling is projected to double these emissions in the next 30 years. However, comfortable buildings are critical for health and productivity, especially among communities that are vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Gradient’s vision is a future where everyone has access to comfortable buildings that are fully decarbonized. Our launch product is a direct-to-consumer high-efficiency and low-carbon heat pump.

Employee Benefits / Important Requirements

  • Location requirements: 100% onsite
  • Work authorization requirements: e.g. US Citizens, open to students with F-1 Visa
  • Compensation: $35/hour
  • Hours per week: e.g. 40 hours per week

PROJECT / DELIVERABLES

We are looking for a Thermal Engineering Intern to support Gradient’s efforts to develop technologies that enable high-performance heat pumps with low environmental impact. The ideal applicant has a solid fundamental understanding of the thermal sciences, an appreciation of our mission, and isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop thermal components and systems in collaboration with a team of thermal engineers and technicians
  • Run tests to measure thermal and fluid performance of heat pump components (heat exchangers, fans, pumps, compressors) and document the results
  • Analyze test data to recommend design improvements
  • Communicate findings of design and development efforts with the larger Gradient team

Are you the person we need?

“Must-have” Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline
  • A solid understanding of the fundamentals of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics
  • Experience with data acquisition systems (e.g., NI DAQ) or other microcontrollers (e.g., robotics)
  • Hands-on experience in a laboratory, machine shop, repair shop, or similar
  • Ability to effectively document and communicate results of tests and design work

“Nice-to-have” Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with HVAC systems
  • Hands-on experience with thermal measurements
  • Experience with CAD (e.g., Solidworks)

We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive company. We seek to create a culture where everyone can belong because we believe that people do their best work when they can show up every day as their authentic selves. We welcome people of different backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives.
