We're hiring a founding software engineer (NYC based or hybrid) to lead our software development and be a part of Fram Energy's early story.

On Fram Energy

Rental homes are lagging behind in the energy transition: renters have 20% higher energy cost than owner occupied homes, adoption of heat pumps is 4x lower in rental homes and less than 1% of residential rooftop solar is installed on rental homes. This is a climate problem, an equity problem and a missed economical opportunity.

Fram Energy is bringing energy retrofits to the massive, underserved rental market, starting with multifamily. We identified the key barriers that are keeping energy retrofits from being deployed and developed a business model that tackles them. Our platform de-risks investments in energy retrofits and realigns incentives. For property owners, we open up a new income stream whilst simultaneously addressing net zero goals. For renters, we lower energy bills and increase comfort and quality of life. For the planet, we unlock gigascale emissions reduction.

Fram Energy is wrapping up a $1.5M pre-seed fundraising round led by Precursor Ventures, with participation from strong climate, fintech and proptech investors. Our first pilot projects will be deployed this fall.

What you'll do (impact)

As one of our first hires, you will be a big part of Fram Energy’s story. You will lead the technical development of our product. This role is first and foremost a great opportunity to drive the development of an impactful product, but at this early stage there is always so much to do that you’ll end up getting involved in all kinds of company activities. There will be several exciting growth paths available to you. We have two key components of our product: property owner facing and rental tenant facing. By the time you start, both of these products will be somewhere between MVP and beta (tested and deployed in first pilot projects, but not yet complete in terms of features). You’ll be working with our customer-facing and data operations teams to build a software stack that enables Fram Energy to meet the needs of different types of users.

You’ll drive Fram Energy’s success by:

  • Owning and executing Fram Energy’s vision on software development.
    You will set goals and create operating principles for our software development. In close collaboration with team members working on operations, data and customer/product, you will:
  • propose the tools and practices for Fram Energy’s software development;
  • collaborate with the rest of the team to make product decisions and define the technical roadmap- translating goals into milestones and daily to do’s;
  • set up systems to code in a collaborative and structured manner.
  • Building a flexible backend that will support high velocity growth.
    You will be developing backend architecture for the long term. We have started off by building the product in its simplest form, but it will become a lot more complex as we add more features and users and our philosophy is to build for growth from day 1. You will drive decisions on architecture and implementation.
  • Improving UX & frontend development through user obsession.
    You will own the frontend of our product. Our focus in the pre-seed phase is not to build the prettiest & slickest product that the world has ever seen, but to test our key hypotheses around how we can create value for our users. As UX and frontend development play a big role in delivering Fram Energy’s value prop to our users, you’ll shape how users interact with Fram’s product.
  • Solving interesting technical problems.
    This will be a job full of problem solving and creativity. We’re building from scratch, so most of your days will be spent finding elegant and practical ways to deal with problems that pop up. You’re encouraged to play around in order to find the best solution.
  • Hustling as part of our founding team!
    In this early stage, everyone will be helping out beyond their job description, and every person on the founding team has the chance to grow in directions that they find meaningful.

Qualifications

We’re a bit flexible on titles and such, but we are looking for evidence that you have the skills and experience take the lead of our software development.

  • Preferred experience building software applications.
    You have previously built (big or small) applications from scratch, implementing both backend and frontend. If any of these are open to share, it would be great if you can drop links in the application form so we can see some examples of your work.
  • Preferred relevant software skills.
    Preferences towards AWS, Django, Python, React, and JavaScript familiarity, but we believe in the power of similar systems and transferable skills.
    Please share your proficiency in programming languages in the application form.
  • Education.
    B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in computer science or related field is a plus, but not a hard requirement if you learned to code elsewhere.
  • Work experience.
    Work experience as a software engineer is a must. Ideally 3+ years, and a big plus if you’ve worked in multiple environments and projects.
  • Geographic fit.
    The position is located in New York City, working in-person at least 3 days a week. We're open to helping with relocation.
