Role Description:

The Systems Engineering team within the Technology group at Form is multidisciplinary and focused on delivering the product enclosure and auxiliary systems design for Form Energy's energy storage system.

We're hiring a hands-on Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Mechanical team within Systems Engineering. In this role, you will contribute to designing our utility-scale multi-day energy storage system's electrolyte management system. Our ideal team member will have a broad, interdisciplinary background in fluid system design, mechanical engineering, and electrical component interfaces. The focus of this role will be on the electrolyte management system, which is at the heart of Form’s iron-air battery technology and critical to the system’s successful operation.

You will participate in the product conceptual and detailed design, first-of-a-kind build activities, vendor engagement, and design for manufacturing. You can expect to work on various prototyping efforts across the company, driving us through a series of internal system prototypes and working closely with a cross-functional team of chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineers to design, prototype, and test the storage systems. You will be responsible for design validation before the final manufacturing release.

If this sounds like the perfect position for you, apply now! This opportunity will help shape and scale our multi-day energy storage system, contributing to the growth of a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission, contributing to a sustainable future!

What you'll do:

  • Design, prototype, and test the electrolyte management system to meet critical performance requirements
  • Participate in component integration events, fabricating and testing first-of-a-kind prototypes to validate system design choices
  • Lead critical vendor engagements and collaborate with manufacturing engineers to transition system designs from prototype to high-volume production
  • Collaborate with the Battery Products team to co-develop electrolyte, air, fluid, and gas handling systems
  • Champion for safety, especially in the development of new laboratory processes
  • Participate in first fielded units for systems validation

What you'll bring:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Bachelor's with 7+ years of industry experience in mechanical design with equipment, liquid or gas handling systems
  • Experience with first-principles modeling and design and experience optimizing designs for manufacturing and cost-down
  • Experience with working in a manufacturing environment or with contract manufacturing vendors
  • Demonstrated experience with optimizing mechanical design, balance-of-plant systems, and interdisciplinary interfaces of fluid systems or airflow systems
  • Direct experience in product development within an early-stage environment
  • Prior experience in Energy Storage, Battery Systems, Renewable Energy, or Utility industry is a plus
