Role Description

Form Energy is hiring a Senior Electrical Engineer to supercharge efforts to design our power collection and electrical protection systems. You will drive the design of protection systems for the converters, support equipment and interfaces that deliver energy from our batteries to the grid. This includes the high-power and high-voltage DC/DC converters, grid-tied AC/DC inverters, transformers and wiring systems for both prototypes and the product-intent design. Specific responsibilities include overload protection, short-circuit current protection, arc flash mitigation, isolation monitoring, surge protection and the planning of comprehensive grounding schemes.

Your work will be focused on our primary 1500V DC power path, but will occasionally involve 480V to 690V AC distribution systems as well. You will need to communicate clearly with suppliers to secure design guidance on the most appropriate and cost-effective solutions for the different stages of power collection, and collaborate with our own Integration team and Project Engineering to develop a solution that is mindful of the complete site architecture. This is an exciting opportunity to scale the power delivery system of a breakthrough technology at a fast-moving company with an incredible mission!

What you'll do:

  • Own the design and analysis of the protection systems for our DC power collection, as well as aspects of the AC auxiliary distribution and loads
  • Collaborate with external partners to specify 1500V DC fuses and contactors, from the battery module to the central inverter
  • Prepare battery system coordination studies that are aware of both upstream and downstream components, as well as conditions for a given site or installation, such as high ambient temperature
  • Determine surge susceptibility at each node in the product architecture and work with supply chain to source components that deliver adequate protection
  • Own the design and testing of insulation monitoring across our battery platforms as well as the product architecture they inform
  • Assist in cable sizing and selection based on ampacity requirements, environmental considerations and any applicable compliance standards or regulations
  • Produce engineering diagrams, notes and documentation as well as support materials for procurement, manufacturing and compliance
  • Support other aspects of the power conversion system design, test and release process and grow as team and product needs evolve

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher and 5+ years of experience in electrical engineering
  • Ability to understand and produce power and control schematics and single line diagrams using tools such as AutoCAD, etc.
  • Fluent in software specific to protection studies, such as ETAP or SKM
  • Understanding of electrical installation standards, including NFPA 70, NFPA 855, and UL 9540
  • Demonstrated experience in electric power generation, distribution, energy storage, or drivetrains
  • Electrical system design experience in a product development environment; familiarity with product safety standards such as UL 508A and UL 1741 a plus
  • Discipline around high-voltage (1500 V) and high-current (> 2 kA); experience with NFPA 70E a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain design decisions, summarize observations, and absorb information and requirements from other teams
