Role Description:

The Systems Engineering team within the Technology group at Form is multidisciplinary and focused on delivering the product enclosure and auxiliary systems design for Form Energy's energy storage system.

We're hiring a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer II to join the Mechanical team within Systems Engineering. In this role, you will contribute to the design of our utility-scale multi-day energy storage system's thermal management system. Our ideal team member will have a broad, interdisciplinary background in mechanical engineering, fluid system design, and electrical component interfaces. The focus of this role will be on the thermal management system, which is an integral part of the performance of Form’s iron-air battery technology and critical to the system’s successful operation.

You will participate in the product conceptual and detailed design, first-of-a-kind build activities, vendor engagement, and design for manufacturing. You can expect to work on various prototyping efforts across the company, driving us through a series of internal system prototypes and working closely with a cross-functional team of chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineers to design, prototype, and test the storage systems. You will be responsible for design validation before the final manufacturing release.

If this sounds like the perfect position for you, apply now! This opportunity will help shape and scale our multi-day energy storage system, contributing to the growth of a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission, contributing to a sustainable future!

What you'll do:

  • Design, prototype, and test thermal management and air delivery systems to meet critical performance requirements
  • Participate in component integration events, fabricating and testing first-of-a-kind prototypes to validate system design choices
  • Support critical vendor engagements and collaborate with manufacturing engineers to transition system designs from prototype to high-volume production
  • Collaborate with the Battery Products team to co-develop electrolyte, air, fluid, and gas handling systems
  • Champion for safety, especially in the development of new laboratory processes
  • Participate in first fielded units for systems validation

What you'll bring:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with 1 - 3 years of industry experience in mechanical design with thermal systems
  • Proficiency in CAD with mechanical design in airflow system components (exhaust, fan, ducting)
  • Experience with the design of sheet metal parts to optimize designs for manufacturing and cost-down, including bending, stamping, riveting, PEM nut fasteners
  • Experience with working in a manufacturing environment or with contract manufacturing vendors
  • Knowledge of FEA analysis for brackets, sheet metal assemblies, and ducts
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
