Job Description

About Electra:

Electra's mission is to address decarbonization, sustainability, and circularity across the steel industry value chain. Steel, the backbone of our modern society, contributes 10% of global carbon emissions. Electra has developed a novel process to produce clean iron powered by intermittent renewable energy operating at 60 degrees Celsius (the temperature of coffee), while fossil fuel processes operate at 1,600 degrees Celsius. Electra’s Clean Iron is converted to steel using existing electricity-powered infrastructure, too. As a result, Electra's novel process can eliminate up to 90% of the carbon emissions across the ore-to-steel value chain.

Electra is backed by marquee climate-focused and infrastructure investors, including Bill Gates-founded Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV), Temasek, S2G Ventures, Capricorn Investment Group, and Lowercarbon Capital. Across the iron and steel value chain, Nucor, Amazon, and BHP have also backed Electra.

The Role:

Reporting to our Chief Commercial Officer, Electra is recruiting a Head of Communications & Public Policy to advance our mission to decarbonize the steel industry’s value chain. The successful candidate will counsel our C-suite leaders on critical media and public policy issues that directly affect our business goals, build and execute an integrated public policy and communications strategy, and establish Electra’s share of voice in the national conversations that matter.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and oversee the execution of an integrated communications and public affairs strategy for Electra’s business, with a primary focus on smoothening the road for the development of our first commercial hub.
  • Execute a dedicated Inflation Reduction Act advocacy campaign that advances Electra’s mission and delivers demonstrable regulatory results.
  • Oversee the development of a comprehensive stakeholder mapping exercise, with a specific focus on cultivating durable relationships in the U.S. policy and media ecosystem that enhance Electra’s business strategy.
  • Build corporate and public policy messaging pillars to advance Electra’s business and develop executive speaking and content plans for the company’s leadership team.
  • Act as a source of trusted strategic counsel to the company’s leadership team and Board on communications and public policy issues that affect the business.
  • Institute internal communications processes that enhance Electra’s culture, maintain staff alignment, and drive mission-orientation.
  • Where needed, act as a spokesperson on behalf of the company in key media and policy forums, including media interviews, congressional testimony, and trade association meetings.
  • Over time, staff and resource a team of communications and public policy professionals that are dedicated to the mission of Electra.

Skills & Experience:

  • Personal and professional passion for decarbonization and working to mitigate the worst effects of climate change.
  • 15+ years of experience in strategic communications and public policy, with a particular emphasis on building and leading these same functions.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, law, public policy, political science or a related field. Master’s degree is a bonus.
  • Deep experience working directly with C-Suite leaders and board members.
  • Creative thinker with stellar written and verbal communication skills—particularly the ability to write clear, persuasive, and approachable content that engages a wide range of stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge of legislative and administrative policymaking processes at both the state and federal levels.
  • The ability to synthesize complex environmental and industrial technologies for a range of audiences, including media, policymakers, and investors.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for a diverse range of audiences.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to navigate ambiguity and rapidly shifting business priorities.

Location: Boulder or Washington, D.C. are preferred locations, but remote work will be permitted on a case-by-case basis. Extensive travel across the U.S. will be required.

Targeted Base Salary: $230,000-$280,000

Benefits For You:
