Product Development Engineer - Connectors

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Connection Systems Engineering, the Product Development Engineer - Connectors will be responsible for the 3D model development along with 2D print development and library release of low- and high-voltage connection systems.

This person will be engaged in the concept design, prototyping, engineering, testing, manufacture, release, and launch of connectors for integration with flexible harnesses. They will support engineering activity for assigned programs to ensure that products meet customer, company, and industry specifications and that program milestones are achieved.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • 3D CAD modeling capability (CATIA V5, Solid Works, or UG).
  • Part design for progressive die and injection molding.
  • Knowledge of material science with resins and metal.
  • Ability to mature a design project through concept development, prototype, and production phases.
  • Able to follow APQP processes for project documentation.
  • Support validation testing to complete bench and vehicle level durability (USCAR, LV214, GMW3191).
  • Troubleshoot and root cause, document, and drive to issue resolution.
  • Participate in design review and XFMEA meetings to ensure lessons learned and best practices are incorporated.
  • Efficiently utilize rapid prototype development to show proof of concept.
  • Perform or support customer and internal drawing releases.
  • Work closely with other internal and customer teams to ensure good communication for seamless and robust vehicle implementation.
  • Work closely with manufacturing/suppliers to ensure diagnostics tools are developed for production deployment and service.
  • Help drive best practices and deploy world-class tools, creating new technologies and solutions.

Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related fields.
  • 2+ years of product design experience, specifically in automotive connectors.
  • Experience with 3D CAD systems, Solid Works preferred.
  • Experience with product development of High Voltage / Low Voltage automotive connection systems (design attributes and industry specifications).
  • Experience to support product development/manufacture during DV/PV/SOP phases.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with various internal and external teams.
  • A results-driven, enthusiastic, and eager personality is highly desired!

Working Conditions/Hours:

  • Position is a 100% onsite position based in Wixom, MI, with occasional travel (~10%) to CelLink locations and customers around the globe.

Work Environment – Office

Includes both a typical office environment, with minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental issues, and a shop environment, with exposure to high noise levels from operating machines, physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts, nuisance dust, and exposure to hazardous materials used in the manufacturing process.

PPE

Employee may be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment, including but not limited to safety glasses, safety shoes, bump-caps, gloves, hair nets, masks, & clean-room frocks while adhering to the prescribed safety procedures. Ear plugs are recommended in areas of high noise levels that meet minimum OSHA requirements.

Physical Demands – Office

This position requires the ability to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel and to manipulate keys on a keyboard. The employee is required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close and peripheral vision. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds without assistance (including ability to carry 20 lbs. up and down stairs).
