Job Description

ABOUT THE COALITION

The Building Decarbonization Coalition (BDC) unites building industry stakeholders with energy providers, environmental justice organizations, clean energy advocates, unions and workforce stakeholders, and state and local governments to help electrify homes and businesses.

Through coalition-building, consumer inspiration, and policy analysis, the BDC is pursuing fast, fair action to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps and other building electrification products and services, which will help states cut one of their largest sources of pollution while creating safe, healthy, and affordable communities.

POSITION SUMMARY

Several major market actors active in the HVAC, water heating, and home appliance supply chain across the U.S. are active in the Coalition. BDC convenes these companies, along with other Coalition members, in order to generate consensus about how best to conduct the complicated business of decarbonizing every home, business, and institutional building in the United States.

In November 2023, these private sector Coalition members came together in Washington, DC to adopt a first-of-its-kind policy statement, which details how states can decarbonize their building stock “in a fashion that is safe, smooth, durable, consumer-friendly, environmentally responsible, and economically beneficial.”

BDC’s Market Transformation division is convening and organizing these companies with an eye toward implementing elements of that policy platform.

The Senior Manager will lead this work, taking care to foster a sense of purpose and camaraderie with and between Coalition members and focusing on practical strategies for developing the building electrification marketplace in the states.

BDC is seeking a creative systems thinker, people-person, and building decarbonization subject matter expert with a knack for keeping disparate personalities engaged. This position may supervise one or more direct reports.

The Senior Manager will provide strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, coalition recruitment, meeting facilitation, and project management capabilities for the following:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Lead BDC’s engagement with partners in the manufacturing sector, working with companies’ government relations staff to stay abreast of major issues and develop intervention strategies that will help to grow the market for efficient, electric equipment.
  • Expand BDC’s Market Transformation initiative by recruiting new private sector partners, outlining collaborative projects alongside them, and seeking alignment between Coalition members from different industries.
  • Support the Director of Market Transformation in convening and facilitating working groups with existing Coalition partners, focused on major decarbonization market growth opportunities and issues of concern.
  • Assist BDC’s California, New York, Policy Acceleration, and State Mobilization teams in their advocacy for regulatory reform, better incentive program design, and other key transition topics.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on building decarbonization policy pathways and regulatory strategies in specific states as needed.
  • Solicit feedback from diverse stakeholders – including manufacturers, professional associations, environmental justice advocates, unions, major end users, and state and local policymakers – and incorporate into BDC work plans.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Substantial subject matter knowledge regarding commercial and residential energy systems is required. Familiarity with building science, utility business models, the refrigerant transition, and major electric grid or gas distribution system issues would be an asset.
  • Outstanding relationship management and coalition-building skills, including a genuine willingness to hear, consider, and account for divergent viewpoints.
  • Desire to work within a participatory organizational culture which insists on the value of each team member’s contribution without sacrificing decisiveness or agility.
  • Demonstrated success facilitating challenging discussions with and between diverging interests in pursuit of a high-stakes goal.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, as BDC is a young organization which is building innovative new initiatives in a complicated issue area where concerted attention from decision makers has grown considerably.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Experience working with an HVAC or water heating manufacturer; industry association; energy efficiency incentive program; or federal, state, or municipal agency — preferably in a policy-focused role.

WORK ENVIRONMENT, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

The Senior Manager will work remotely from their home and can be based anywhere in the United States, though Eastern or Central time zones are preferred. Some travel will be required, respective of Covid-related health and safety guidelines.
