Job Description

ABOUT THE COALITION

The Building Decarbonization Coalition (BDC) unites building industry stakeholders with energy providers, environmental justice organizations, clean energy advocates, unions and workforce stakeholders, and state and local governments to help electrify homes and businesses.

Through coalition-building, consumer inspiration, and policy analysis, the BDC is pursuing fast, fair action to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps and other building electrification products and services, which will help states cut one of their largest sources of pollution while creating safe, healthy, and affordable communities.

POSITION SUMMARY

Transitioning millions of American homes and workplaces to clean energy is a complicated project which demands clear, actionable information. The better and more impartial this information is, the more effective state policymaking and funding allocation will be. In addition, states who have already adopted a pro-electrification policy regime must be able to measure their progress, for which reliable data will be indispensable.

Yet, due partially to strident opposition from certain economic incumbents, confusion about the size of the marketplace for electrification technologies, their costs and benefits, and the feasibility of widespread electrification continue to slow progress unnecessarily. At this critical moment, growing stakeholders’ awareness of the information that is available—including its limitations—and building new data resources that do not currently exist are important priorities for BDC and its Coalition.

BDC is seeking an experienced data analyst, strong writer, and stellar project manager with an interest in making complicated climate topics understandable for an audience of lay people. This person will not initially supervise any direct reports.

The Manager will be BDC’s go-to person for data about the building electrification marketplace. They will provide analytical, report- and memo-writing, data management, and project management capabilities for the following:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop and regularly release state-level building electrification progress reports using data from EIA, EPA, AHRI, HARDI, ENERGY STAR, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).
  • Conduct careful analysis that forecasts building electrification technology uptake given the current installed base and sales trends.
  • Obtain, clean, organize, and maintain responsibility for information resources pertaining to the building electrification marketplace, including raw data from diverse sources, external market research, industry publications, and reports.
  • Build and maintain interactive analytical tools that can be used by non-analysts to answer common building decarbonization subject matter questions, e.g. how many air- or ground-source heat pumps were installed in a state in a given year.
  • Develop strategies for data visualization in collaboration with BDC’s communications team.
  • Collaborate closely with team members who oversee BDC’s sponsored research initiatives by reviewing consultant work products or conducting supplementary analysis as needed.
  • Scope and execute new analytical projects to support BDC’s market transformation initiatives, in collaboration with the Director.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5-7 years of experience working with data to communicate insights in a manner that is honest, careful, clear, and easy for a non-technical audience to understand.
  • Outstanding skill in MS Excel is required. Experience working with other analytical tools—Tableau, R, Python, SAS—would be considered a strong asset.
  • Subject matter knowledge regarding building energy systems, the electric grid, and/or the natural gas distribution system is required.
  • A personal commitment to pragmatic and expeditious climate action.
  • Strong people skills, including a genuine willingness to hear, consider, and account for divergent viewpoints.
  • Desire to work within a participatory organizational culture which insists on the value of each team member’s contribution without sacrificing decisiveness or agility.
