Job Description

Sr. Mechanical Engineer

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer (ME) will report to the Manager of Mechanical Engineering in support of all mechanical engineering related activities at AEye, Inc. Primary effort will be to support all hardware development (R&D) activities in the Development Engineering group. In addition, he/she will also participate in activities related to operations (NPI), quality and systems engineering directed by the Sr. Mechanical Engineer. The candidate should have experience and background in solid modeling using SolidWorks and rapid prototyping (3D printing, CNC). The candidate will create mechanical drawings and conduct tolerance analysis of all modules and parts in the lidar assembly. He/she will participate in incoming inspection (IQC) of parts in support of quality and development cycles. The candidate should have experience in mechanical, thermal and flow simulations using FEA software to model loads/stress, heat dissipation, and other physical parameters. AEye, Inc is a highly cross-functional working environment, and the candidate needs to have good communication and cooperative work skills with diverse backgrounds and skills.

Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Able to manage tasks based on workload, priorities, and scheduling requirements.
  • Design parts and complex assemblies using 3D CAD software (SolidWorks) containing optics, electronics, and mechanical components.
  • Perform Mechanical, Thermal, and flow simulations using FEA software (SolidWorks Simulation preferred)
  • Create manufacturing drawings using geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5.
  • Design, build and troubleshoot prototype devices and testing fixtures.
  • Engage in testing, perform root cause analysis, and perform other design verification activities.
  • Attend meetings with external suppliers and contract manufacturers and advise on technical issues.
  • Create detailed Bills of Material and technical specifications documents for products.
  • Serve as subject matter expert and perform engineering change notice processes.
  • Assist other groups as needed.
  • Occasional lifting up to 40lbs.
  • Occasional travel to contract manufacturer sites and other activities (<10%)

Essential Skills & Experience Requirements (required):

  • 7+ years experience in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering degree.
  • Understanding of automotive, aerospace, and industrial equipment environments, design of opto-mechanical and electrical equipment to operate and survive in the presence of such environments.
  • Experience with interfacing electrical boards (PCBs) with mechanical structures
  • Mechanical and thermal modeling/analysis
  • Advanced modeling skills with 3D CAD and CAE software (Solidworks)
  • Proven understanding and ability to use hand and powered machine tools.
  • Understanding of standard fabrication processes (cnc machining, casting, injection molding, 3d printing) and ability to design easily manufactured parts.
  • Ability to produce technical presentations for both internal & external target audiences.
  • Experience with design engineering process, documentation and configuration control of the design and associated documentation.
  • Extensive experience in mechanical concept development in support of proposals for new business pursuits (start ups).
  • Excellent communication, presentation & collaboration skills.
  • Position is in person in our Pleasanton, CA office.

Preferred Skills & Experience (useful):

  • Experience with optics and opto-mechanical systems (lens, lasers, fibers).
  • Experience with thermal management of electronic components.
  • Experience with industrial design.
  • Experience in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Experience with PCB design, fabrication and troubleshooting.

Annual Base Salary Range - $150,000-$175,000
