About the Job

The Director of Fusion Technologies position provides planning and execution of several important systems for the upcoming TAE Copernicus Project. The responsibilities include direct engineering tasks along with leading teams of scientists and engineers assigned to the various sub-systems. This position will participate in all phases of the design, analysis, manufacturing and deliveries from conceptual design through installation and commissioning. The design and manufacturing process is done in conformance to TAE requirements roughly aligned with ISO 9001 standards. Role is based in Irvine, CA.

  • Work with the TAE technical and executive teams to coordinate and deliver major systems for the new Copernicus research reactor being built to reach relevant performance levels.
  • Develop and apply program management skills to communicate status and progress on major subsystems to the Program Office.
  • Direct technical teams concentrating on various fusion-related components for the program. Specifically applying industry leading technologies for components such as beam dumps, first walls, limiters, and other plasma facing components.
  • Oversee product architecture and design process, using experience and industry knowledge to mentor and motivate less senior engineers.
  • Participates in the development of schedules.
  • Ability to track product requirements, including task estimation, resulting in engineering execution plans clearly defining measurable engineering phases or milestones.
  • Components will be designed, analyzed, manufactured and commissioned with the help of TAE designers, analysts, engineers and physicists.
  • Material selection for various components shall be accomplished considering the lack of neutron flux in our system design. Familiarity with refractory components and their application is preferred.
  • Propose solutions consistent with magnetically confined fusion devices for high performance diagnostics, magnetic shielding, wall conditioning techniques, etc.
  • Utilizing industry proven suppliers for complex components involving bonding, pressing, laser welding, additive manufacturing, advanced coating, etc.
  • Takes part in review activities for all aspects of the product development process (e.g. requirements, design, and hazard reviews).
  • Detect technology and design issues and take timely corrective action, developing alternative approaches or proposing the diversion of resources where necessary.
  • Ensure safety and quality considerations and requirements are pro-actively addressed and implemented in product design.

About You

  • 20+ years of experience supporting complex equipment, including design, analysis, design review cycles, integration, and fabrication.
  • Specific experience leading teams in the research and development of magnetically confined fusion devices.
  • Knowledge of design and analysis, fabrication, welding, material science of refractory, copper and stainless, high temperature bonding techniques, and fluid flow design.
  • Extensive experience working with vendors of fabricated plasma facing structures and knowledge of deviations, non-conformances and quality processes.
  • Ability to review complex designs and propose alternatives or improvements. Ability to create solutions to unique problems in coordination with technical team.
  • Ability to coordinate design reviews covering all aspects of design and manufacturing.
  • Plasma surface interaction knowledge including erosion, sputtering, plasma contamination, etc. is preferred.
  • Understanding of load cases and combinations with their associated assessment criteria.
  • Familiarity with CAD Systems, preferably SolidWorks and/or Catia.
  • Knowledge of analysis tools such as ANSYS Multi-physics or similar.
  • Familiarity with Computational Fluid Dynamics and high heat transfer calculations.
  • Program management software for developing and tracking projects.

Education

  • Advanced degree in Engineering or closely related field.
