About the Role:

We currently have an opening at our Foothill Ranch, CA (Orange County) facility for a Sr Power Electronics Engineer. In this position, the candidate will be responsible for the high-power power converter design through all development stages, from concept to production. As a senior team member, the candidate will be responsible for topology design, simulation, analysis, component selecting, control development, as well as lab prototyping and testing. The candidate will work in close collaboration with contract manufacturers to ensure accurate clarification of technical specification and requirements. The candidate will collaborate with electrical, power electronics, mechanical and software engineers, product managers, vendors, and manufacturing personnel to ensure successful project coordination and integration. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and development of power electronics converters and grid-tied inverters for stationary energy storage applications
  • Select and design circuit topology, active and passive components and circuit board layout including gate drivers, active clamps, high voltage measurement circuits, grounding systems, insulation systems, etc.
  • Design high power magnetic components including three-phase filter inductors, chokes, and EMI filters.
  • Evaluate architectures and topologies considering numerous performance metrics including electrical, thermal, cost, manufacturability, and commercial viability.
  • Lead engineering activities from specification to design, prototyping and manufacturing.
  • Develop control algorithms, prototyping, testing and validating power electronics products.
  • Take part in the requirement development for power electronics converters and systems.
  • Collaborate with the manufacturing team to develop production processes.
  • Build and manage a strong business relationship with suppliers.
  • Lead test plan development, issue resolution, and lab testing of power electronic systems.
  • Collaborate throughout the organization with engineers, quality assurance, manufacturing, and part vendors.
  • Participate in documentation for manuals, processes, and procedures.
  • Occasional travel may be required (<10%).

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in electrical engineering with a focus on Power Electronics. Master's or PhD degrees preferred.
  • 5+ years of power electronics product design.
  • Strong understanding of three-phase inverter operation, IGBT/MOSFET operation, protection circuits, switching and conduction loss, power switches thermal management, magnetic design.
  • Experience designing high power (>50kW) inverter and converters
  • Capable of creating models, simulations, and analysis tools to solve engineering problems using MATLAB/Simulink (preferred), PLECs, PSIM, or similar engineering tools.
  • Experience of power converter systems simulation and analysis experience.
  • Strong familiarity with design, development, and manufacturability of power converters.
  • Experience in cable harness, bus bar design, and system integration.
  • Experience with typical commercial and industrial electrical power (480Vac, three-phase)
  • Proficient in the design of analog circuits, and schematic capture
  • Sufficient skills in working with lab equipment including oscilloscope, power supplies, digital meters, voltage and current probes, electronics load, and grid simulator.
  • Ability to work well within a team and clearly communicate technical progress and challenges
  • Able to lead conceptual design, prototype testing, and coordinate setup for volume production
  • Strong problem-solving and circuit debugging skills
  • Must be able to communicate proficiently in English
  • Must be willing to relocate to Orange County, California within 1 months of signing a job acceptance letter. Eligible for domestic relocation assistance

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Experience designing high power (>200kW) inverter and converters
  • Experience designing and using >1200V/1700V 1000A class IGBT’s/SiC MOSFET
  • Experience designing, building, and testing gate drivers and protection circuits for Si IGBT, SiC MOSFETs
  • Experience and understanding of multi-level high power conversion systems, and their control and modulation methods
  • PCB circuit design and board layout experience for voltages > 500 V strongly desired
  • Experience with Altium
  • Knowledge of typical standards for design of commercial and industrial electrical equipment [IEEE1547, UL1741, …]
  • Knowledge of special functions needed for solar, battery energy storage applications, grid support functions
  • Familiar with three phase power systems, fusing, fault protection coordination
  • Knowledge of grounding systems and insulation systems for lighting strike, line faults, battery faults
  • PCB fabrication, contract manufacturing, testing high voltage design, spacing, isolation circuits
  • Industrial/commercial PCB design principles and standards including isolation calculations, creepage / clearance, UL standards, IPC standards, trace resistance and heating, trace width calculations
  • Hands on lab skills, prototyping, testing, cable harness fabrication, lab testing, board bring-up.
  • Firmware development for power electronics systems (preferred).
  • CAD design and engineering drawings (SolidWorks).
  • PCB design using Altium.
  • Performing characterization tests for various components such as passive components.
