As the Director of Civil and Structural Engineering, you will provide strategic leadership and technical expertise in civil and structural engineering to oversee the early due-diligence, site specific studies, preliminary design and execution support of our utility-scale solar power plants. You will serve as the company’s civil and structural subject matter expert (SME) and lead a small team in the technical evaluation, risk assessment and mitigation strategies of Pine Gate’s multi-GW pipelines across a vast geographic footprint. The Director of Civil and Structural Engineering will report to the Vice President of Pre-Construction and will impact the overall company growth strategies, advance design and analysis principles, practices, and concepts. The candidate must have a distinguished record of pile-based foundation design and geotechnical risk evaluation to be successful.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Subject Matter Experts
  • Manage small team responsible for Civil, Structural and Geotechnical
  • Lead initial civil and geotechnical desktop studies of project sites.
  • Support technical due diligence of M&A opportunities.
  • Identify potential project risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure safe and reliable project execution.
  • Conduct technical analyses using GIS, CAD, and other engineering software, offering guidance to Development and EPCm on terrain analysis, particularly concerning site civil requirements and land limitations.
  • Complete preliminary mounting structure grading designs that are optimized against structure tolerances, pile reveal range and site conditions.
  • Develop company best practices specific to terrain evaluation and structure grading optimization.
  • Create and maintain specifications and scopes of work for geotechnical exploration, pile load testing, and corrosion reports.
  • Review proposals for Geotech, Pile Load Testing, and Corrosion Studies to ensure compliance with published standards and sufficiency for site specific conditions.
  • Review completed geotechnical, pile load testing & corrosion reports, assess risks and produce preliminary pile foundation designs to be used for cost estimating and construction feasibility purposes.
  • Lead value engineering efforts to identify and develop project specific alternative cost effective pv foundation design approaches for challenging subsurface conditions.
  • Collaborate with Civil Engineer, Owner Engineering, EPC Management, and others produce the optimal system design.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of external engineering design packages prepared by EPC partners at key project milestones, including 30%, 60%, 90%, and IFC (Issued for Construction) design stages.
  • Provide detailed feedback to project delivery team regarding design optimizations, constructability, feasibility, and potential risk areas at each review stage.
  • Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) from External EPC partners during the construction phase.
  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in civil and structural engineering technologies and solar energy trends, and drive innovation within the department.
  • Mentor and train other engineers in structural and geotechnical engineering principles and methods
  • Perform peer reviews of project deliverables.

Must-Haves

  • Minimum 7+ years of Civil, Structural and Geotechnical engineering experience with utility scale solar/renewable Photovoltaic (PV) systems.
  • Experience leading and managing a small team.
  • Strong understanding of relevant industry codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Prior knowledge of PV devices, system design and technology.
  • Knowledge of common solar-array racking systems and manufacturers
  • Experience using common foundation design software such as LPILE and completing preliminary pile designs.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Map 3D, and/or Civil 3D
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting design documents associated with PV systems.
  • Ability to analyze, verify, and summarize complex data.
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting design documents associated with PV systems.
  • Equally effective working independently or in team environment.
  • Experienced working across multiple concurrent projects in various stages
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet project timelines.
  • Flexibility conducive to a fast-paced, growing company environment.
  • Skilled in the use of a personal computer and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Power Point)
  • Willing to travel and work non-standard hours when required.

Education and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a relate field.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License

Working Environment and Physical Demand

  • May require lifting/carrying items up to 50 pounds.
  • Travel up to 20%
