Overair is positioned to be a global leader in advanced air mobility. Based in Santa Ana, California, Overair’s rapidly growing team is harnessing decades of aerospace innovation led by Abe Karem, creator of the Predator unmanned aerial vehicle and the A160 Hummingbird, to build and operate all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for urban air mobility. With a path to FAA certification in the mid-2020s, Butterfly will be the most robust, efficient and quiet aircraft in its class.

Job Overview:

Overair is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer, Dynamic System to take ownership of significant aircraft dynamic systems. Qualified candidates will be responsible for overseeing, designing, developing, and analyzing dynamic components and assemblies for the aircraft/rotorcraft primary propulsion system. This role requires the candidate to thrive in a high paced environment and be comfortable with the design, development, and test life cycle of rapid aerospace R&D. This role will include interfacing with engineering management, certification authorities, operations, external suppliers, and fellow design engineers, so strong communication and inter-personal skills are required.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Generate and evaluate conceptual layouts for critical dynamic system
  • Power transmission system includes rotor hub, drive shaft, bearing and housing
  • Design and analysis of structural components of dynamic system
  • Define key system requirements and take ownership of them through the design life-cycle
  • Collaborate on internal design standards and methodologies
  • Design mechanical parts and assemblies
  • Create CAD parts and assemblies in an integrated vehicle Digital Mockup (DMU) environment; create drawings for manufacture; generate assembly instructions
  • Perform initial sizing of parts and components
  • Hand calculations, spreadsheets, initial FEA/FEM
  • Finalize designs and design documentation
  • Review other mechanical designs and drawings
  • Review for design intent, sizing, manufacturability, and GD&T
  • Support developmental test efforts (lab, ground and flight testing)
  • Mentor other design engineers and analysts

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 6 years of professional industry experience
  • BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • Extensive mechanical design aptitude and analytical mindset and a track record of mechanical system design in weight critical applications
  • Experience designing critical dynamic components, which have been sized for strength, stiffness, fatigue, or a combination thereof
  • Extensive understanding of mechanical design fundamentals and analysis methods for parts, assemblies, mechanisms, and joints
  • Deep knowledge in metallic material selection, processing, and manufacturing in aerospace applications; experience with composite structures and assemblies preferred.
  • Highly experienced in 3D CAD and model setup using 3DExperience, CATIA V5/V6, NX, SolidWorks or equivalent CAE tools
  • Highly skilled in generating detailed drawings, to ASME Y14.5-2009 standards
  • Experience supporting lab, ground and flight testing of complex systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related field preferred
  • Expertise specific to CATIA V5/V6/3DX preferred
  • Experience with leveraging finite element analytical tools such as ANSYS, HyperMesh OptiStruct, Nastran or similar
  • Experience with composite structures, assemblies and applications
  • Ideally the candidate has worked through the aerospace certification process and has working-level familiarity with both the design and validation stages of a certification program, including but not limited to: requirements definition; program planning; developing qualification test plans; and conducting qualification testing for the FAA or FAA-appointed designees. This includes working closely with company or external DERs, FAA DARs and generating high-quality artifacts to support the certification program.

Overair expects to pay: $120,000 - $160,000 per year. Your level and the compensation package offered will be determined by location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
