Job Description

Company Overview:

Overair is positioned to be a global leader in advanced air mobility. Based in Santa Ana, California, Overair’s rapidly growing team is harnessing decades of aerospace innovation led by Abe Karem, creator of the Predator unmanned aerial vehicle and the A160 Hummingbird, to build and operate all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for urban air mobility. With a path to FAA certification in the mid-2020s, Butterfly will be the most robust, efficient and quiet aircraft in its class.

We are a casual, happy, collaborative and incredibly motivated team. We believe that a diverse team outperforms because the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. We are passionate about aviation and diminishing its carbon shadow.

Job Overview:

As the Chief Engineer - Dynamic Systems and Actuation, you will be a key member of our engineering leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Engineer. You will be responsible for overseeing and driving the development of dynamic systems, rotor designs, actuation mechanisms, and individual blade control technologies critical to the success of our eVTOL aircraft.

*Full time, Direct hire. Onsite or remote

Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Rotor Systems Design: Lead the design and optimization of rotor systems, including both traditional rotor and innovative rigid rotor concepts, to ensure efficient lift generation, stability, and noise reduction.
  2. Conceptual Layouts: Collaborate with the aerodynamics and vehicle integration teams to create and evaluate conceptual layouts for rotor systems and actuation mechanisms, considering factors such as weight, power consumption, and structural integrity.
  3. Blade Design & Performance: Direct the design and analysis of rotor blades, focusing on aerodynamics, material selection, and structural integrity. Optimize blade performance for various flight conditions, including hover, forward flight, and transitions.
  4. Individual Blade Control (IBC): Develop and implement advanced IBC systems that enable precise control of rotor blades independently. Ensure IBC technology enhances maneuverability, reduces noise, and increases safety.
  5. Technical Leadership: Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and leadership to a multidisciplinary team of engineers and researchers. Foster a culture of innovation and excellence within the dynamic systems and actuation team.
  6. Collaboration: Collaborate closely with other engineering teams, including propulsion, avionics, and vehicle dynamics, to ensure seamless integration of dynamic systems into the overall eVTOL design.
  7. Regulatory Compliance: Stay up-to-date with relevant aviation regulations and standards, and ensure that all dynamic systems and actuation components meet or exceed safety and compliance requirements.
  8. Research & Development: Drive research initiatives and stay abreast of emerging technologies in the field of dynamic systems and actuation to maintain our competitive edge.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Master's or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Proven experience (10+ years) in rotor systems design, actuation, and related fields in the aerospace industry.
  • Strong background in blade design, structural analysis, and aerodynamics.
  • Proficiency in rotorcraft dynamics, controls, and individual blade control (IBC) systems.
  • Leadership experience with a demonstrated ability to lead and mentor engineering teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Knowledge of aviation regulations and certification processes is a plus.

Work Authorization:

The ideal candidate for this role will have authorization to work in the US prior to joining Overair. This role will not sponsor or offer assistance with the sponsorship for work authorization in the United States.

Diversity and Inclusion:

Overair believes that diversity and inclusion are vital to our success.
