Company Overview

Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated and strategic Manager, Government Affairs with expertise and capabilities relevant to legislative and policy issues. This position reports to the Vice President, Regulatory Affairs & Quality, and has the following primary responsibilities:

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Government Affairs (GA) team and intra-company GA network in maintenance and execution of Kairos Power GA policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a daily awareness of legislative developments and policy issues impacting Kairos Power priorities, providing timely input and policy-level insight and recommendations of key federal, state, and local/community issues such as cost-share programs, tax policy, fuel supply, and related legislative and Administration initiatives.
  • Maintain routine communications with Congressional staff and other key stakeholders and facilitate routine executive engagement with key federal and state contacts.
  • Keep the Executive Team informed of key developments and potential opportunities for input and influence.
  • Align Kairos Power strategic plans with government relations efforts, working closely with the Executive Team and external government affairs contract support.
  • Maintain awareness and provide leadership in input/monitoring for key local and state regulatory initiatives. Work closely with Community Engagement and Communications leadership to align efforts, ensuring consistent messaging and effective external communication with non-governmental organizations, as well as local, state, and federal elected officials and governmental offices.
  • Ensure compliance with Kairos Power lobbying policies and procedures.
  • Manage relationships with non-government organizations (NGO) and policy advocates, conducting regular check-ins.
  • Assist Business Development team with policy initiatives as needed.
  • Act on behalf of VP, Regulatory Affairs & Quality, when required.

Successful candidate’s immediate activities will include coordination of efforts in:

  • Ongoing support of Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program contract and associated USDOE interfaces.
  • Coordination of high-assay, low-enriched uranium supply.
  • Establishing strategic direction for spent fuel disposition.
  • Coordination of key clean energy tax credit legislation.
  • Supporting early fleet deployment of advanced reactor technologies.
  • Legislation supporting regulatory framework improvements.
  • Involvement in state-level nuclear advisory councils.

Qualifications

  • BS/BA degree in political science or policy relevant, or engineering/technical discipline with significant experience in policy-related issues with 8+ years relevant experience
  • Ability to analyze complex policy and legislative documents, providing clear summaries and strategic recommendations.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage government relations in challenging situations, ensuring the company’s reputation and interests are well-represented and protected.
  • Experience managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders, ensuring timely and effective execution of government relations strategies.
  • Proven team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent political networking track record preferred.
  • Experience in state and federal energy policy preferred.
  • Experience in preparing Congressional testimony preferred.
  • Experience in local and state governmental relations preferred.
  • Knowledge in regulatory framework for new reactors preferred.
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team.
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge.
  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges, and issues.

Physical Conditions

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.

Environmental Conditions

  • General office environment
  • Accessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned
  • High-concentration, demanding and fast-paced.
  • Occasional visits industrial and construction sites and operational nuclear facilities.

Safety and PPE

  • Reading and interpreting hazardous warning signs
  • Reporting issues with equipment or unsafe conditions

Travel

  • Some travel may be required, up to 25%

Additional Requirements

  • Occasionally requires schedule flexibility.
  • Occasionally requires non-standard workweek hours.
  • Occasionally requires extended hours to support launch and critical project timelines.

The salary range for this position is $152,600 to $190,700 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role.
