Job Description
Hoofprint Biome is a start-up that is leveraging biotechnology to avert the climate crisis. We are engineering enzymes and probiotics to eliminate methane emissions from cattle while also improving nutritional quality and yield. We believe that cattle are a key pillar of sustainable agriculture and human nutrition, and eliminating their methane emissions will enable transformative progress in the fight against climate change.
We’re looking for a talented and dedicated student who is passionate about animal, human, and planetary health. You must be motivated, comfortable with a fast-paced work environment, team oriented, and committed to the research mission. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in animal science research, focusing on the dietary needs and health of ruminants. Candidates will assist our team with various research activities and maintenance of our research herd.
Hoofprint works with a herd of 7 cannulated dairy heifers housed at the NC State University’s Metabolic Education Unit. We work alongside both academic and industry groups pushing the boundaries of agricultural innovation.
Who you are/what you bring:
- Major in animal science or related biology
- Experience working with large animals
- Interest in animal science research/ruminant nutrition
- Strong problem solving skills
- Attention to detail, growth mindset
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Curiosity, intention, tenacity, team mindset, and accountability to the mission
- Ability to work in early mornings (i.e. 7am)
- Previous laboratory or research experience is a plus, but not required
- Must love cows!
Responsibilities include:
- Animal Care: Assist in the daily care and management of research animals, including feeding, watering, and health monitoring
- Data Collection and Entry: Assist Ruminant Nutrition Scientist in collecting and recording data during research trials
- Sample Preparation and Analysis: Prepare biological samples for laboratory analysis
- Laboratory Maintenance: Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment
Position starts September 1st for the duration of the academic year.
