POSITION SUMMARYThe Senior Communications Specialist, 8-month contract will develop, coordinate, and implement external communications to connect Greenpeace's campaign messages and overall mission with key targeted audiences. This position requires the ability to work independently, while also being able to collaborate, co-create and maintain strong team relationships. The Senior Communications Specialist will act as a spokesperson for Greenpeace and will possess strong communication skills for storytelling and for strategic crisis response. This position demonstrates adaptability and will communicate across multiple platforms, producing a variety of written materials, as well as, responding to crisis and circumstance.

The Senior Communications Specialist, 8-month contract (with possibility of extension) is a full-time, exempt, benefits-eligible, hybrid position based in any authorized Greenpeace state: CA, CT, DC, MD, NJ, NY, VA, and will report to the Communications Director. Please note this role requires in-person activities, frequent domestic and/or international travel, and periodic to frequent work outside of normal business hours and/or on the weekends, as needed, sometimes with little notice. This role reports directly to the Communications Director and is represented by the Progressive Workers Union.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy:
● Lead the development of regional, national, and international communication and media strategies, including the development of key messages for global Greenpeace campaign projects
● Lead communications strategy for a crisis response situation, including initiating the response
● Lead communication design across multiple platforms, including visuals, traditional media, digital technologies, and creative confrontation

Content Creation and Production:
● Respond quickly, succinctly, and creatively to breaking news
● Produce written materials including press releases, press advisories, op-eds, letter to the editors, fact sheets, tweets, macros, etc
● Craft compelling narratives and stories that effectively communicate key messages and brand identity
● Aid in strategy of campaigns and direction of campaign/policy work
● Manage the creative production process with internal staff or creative agencies for relevant media, visual, and online materials
● Manage the health of various online social communities through message guidance and output management.
● Work with the social media team to plan and implement weekly social media output, as well as community management Media Relations
● Develop and maintain relationships with reporters, television producers, and other news decision-makers in the United States
● Facilitate incoming media requests including background materials, appropriate spokespeople, etc...
● Act as a credible public spokesperson for Greenpeace (e.g. giving media interviews or speaking on panels quarterly or more frequently)
● Coordinate media events such as press conferences Internal Communications

Internal Communications:

● Identify, brief and train Greenpeace employees to act as spokespeople.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge and Experience:
● Minimum 4 years experience working in a media outlet, PR firm or working as a content creator with demonstrated ability to secure earned media
● B.A. or B.S. degree or comparable communications experience
● Experience pitching reporters, editors, and producers on a variety of types of stories
● Basic understanding of the main social media platforms is a must
● Experience identifying and training employees to act as spokespeople
● Experience with racial and social justice issues is preferred

Skills, Attributes and Competencies:
● Sound news judgment and solid U.S. contacts in both news and feature media
● Fluency in written and spoken English, and another language desirable (especially Spanish)
● Ability to handle numerous tasks at one time and to remain composed under pressure
● Responsive to breaking news
● Effective written communication with the capacity to write quickly, creatively, and efficiently on deadline and to create on-message media materials
● Relationship-building and networking in coalition, with capacity toward emotional intelligence in navigating dynamics.
● Ability to work effectively within a diverse team and independent thinkers

Other:
● Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally with little notice

● Willingness and ability to work outside of normal business hours, as needed
● An interest in podcasting and other emerging broadcast mediums would be a bonus


COMPENSATION Greenpeace offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental and vision coverage with low contributions from staff. This role is graded at a level 3, and a salary within the range of $78,668 - $85,146 is anticipated to be provided to the successful candidate having met the minimum requirements for the position consistent with reflecting our commitment to maintaining competitive and fair compensation practices.
