Job Description
About Us: Aardaia is a cutting-edge startup on a mission to revolutionize crop diversity through domestication on demand. Our flagship project focuses on the aardaker, a sustainable, protein-rich tuber, as a first step toward transforming food systems and creating a resilient, adaptive food economy. By leveraging advanced genomics, speed breeding, and new breeding technologies, we aim to lead the next wave of agricultural innovation.
Role Overview: We are seeking an enthusiastic, hands-on Junior Plant Breeder to join our team. In this dynamic role, you will support our breeding program to domesticate the aardaker. You will work across field, greenhouse, and lab environments, contributing to activities like crossing, line selection, data analysis, and implementing the latest breeding innovations. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about genomics, sustainability, and the future of agriculture to make a tangible impact at an early-stage startup.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute crosses, manage breeding populations, and maintain genetic diversity.
- Conduct phenotyping, data collection, and analysis to identify superior lines.
- Assist in implementing a genomics-assisted breeding pipeline, including genomic selection.
- Contribute to the development of speed breeding protocols and other innovative technologies.
- Support fieldwork, greenhouse trials, and seed/tuber production tasks.
- Collaborate with the team to refine breeding strategies, ensuring alignment with Aardaia’s mission.
- Document and report experimental results in a clear and organized manner.
- Engage in problem-solving to overcome challenges in breeding and crop domestication.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Agronomy, or a related field (Ph.D. preferred but not required).
- Experience in plant breeding programs, including field and greenhouse work.
- Knowledge of genomics, genomic selection, and speed breeding techniques.
- Familiarity with data analysis software for breeding and statistical genetics.
- Strong work ethic, enthusiasm for sustainable agriculture, and a willingness to adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Hands-on experience with phenotyping and managing breeding populations is a plus.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
What We Offer:
- The chance to work at the forefront of crop domestication and agricultural innovation.
- A diverse and challenging role with opportunities for professional growth.
- A collaborative and energetic startup environment.
- The opportunity to make a tangible impact on global food security and sustainability.
